It also provides lots of addition lens performance data which I am still scratching the surface of. Focal performs various setup checks before you even start the calibration to ensure optimum measurement.

One of the things I always struggled with using the manual Lens Align was distance from the target for the various lenses and optimum lighting for the calibration. Using Focal is not just arriving at a number to enter into your camera, it does so much more.

I ditched Focal years ago because the Mac implementation was very flaky, the latest version works perfectly on my Mac running Catalina. Angled ruler, Dot Tune (various ways) Focal several years ago, Len Align and now the latest version of Focal. When the ability to fine tune lenses became available with the D3/D300 I've tried various methods of optimizing my lenses. When I saw here:ĭifferent AF shift values were reported for the same lens on Z6 and Z7, that reminded me an article here:Īlso I suspected the lens copy variation, which seemed to be more common. But when I asked why again AF shift on Z7 they didn't have the answer. The official answer from Nikon (when I asked) for AF shift on DSLR was "spherical aberration". I didn't test extension tubes (what focal length was detected), for adapted Sony/Canon lenses, Nikon camera body reported as different lenses (from Nikon ever made ) with correct focal lengths, and also had some shifts on Z7. I don't think it could be that - otherwise you'd never get AF to work with macro extension rings. I suspected that it was frange distance related: of that lens body combo it was not exactly the same as designed to be.
You don't need to spend $100 you can use plenty of other methods to check focussing accuracy. I want the best out of my equipment and if it takes a bit of extra effort to get it then that's what I'll do. I know that my 80-400 lens just was not sharp on my D810 until I sent it and the camera back to Melville and it was perfect when it came back. There are plenty of Luddites out there that refuse to accept that lenses need calibration I'm not going to argue with them as they're a lost cause. At the end of the testing it shows the initial image and the final image side by side and even though it may only be an AF setting of +1 it does seem a tad sharper to my eyes. My 35mm S was -1 the 85 S was -1.the 300PF was +2 and the 500PF was +1. It then tells you the optimum AF setting for that particular lens. It then prompts you to set the AF to -20 and takes a shot, then -10, 0, +10 and +20. After that you start the test and it takes a before image and initial settings. Distance to the target and insufficient lighting are two that I had to correct initially.

It connects easily enough and takes control of your camera, you run through some setup checks automatically and it informs you if some things are not right for the full test. The camera needs to be on a solid tripod and horizontal to the target. You connect the computer camera after mounting the target in a well lit vertical surface. I printed out the Focus Target but might buy the $20 hard target when I next need to order some stuff from B&H. I downloaded the Mac version of Focal Pro ($99). As I was a bit bored I did decide however to purchase the latest version of Reikan Focal to check out the Z7 and Z6 with my current selection of lenses. I've been very happy with the focusing accuracy of all my Z lenses and the F mount 300PF and the 500PF. I used Reikan Focal some years ago but used Lens Align more recently. In my DSLR days I always used to check the focussing accuracy of my lenses. I believe the Nikon Designers thought the same thing. Being a control systems design engineer I always try add additional capability and features into my systems if I believe at some point it will make my life easier by having them. Nikon added the ability to Fine Tune Lenses for a reason, yeah there's a lot of internet chatter about it, mostly by people that don't know what they're talking about. This is NOT a review of any kind, I'm just sharing my findings after a morning testing some of my lenses.
